CARDIFF SARACENS v ILFORD WANDERERS 29TH AUGUST

CARDIFF SARACENS v ILFORD WANDERERS 29TH AUGUST

With the new league season almost upon us, the Sarries played host to our old friends from Essex in a ‘trail’ match. The format for the match was 4 quarters of 20 mins and with everyone on both sides getting a run out, it was going to be difficult to read anything in to the result.

With a good few new recruits during the summer, the match was more important as a means for coach Stuart Lane to look at combinations ahead of the Sarries first ever game in the national leagues

The Sarries took their time to get in to gear and the first 15 minutes saw Ilford dominate both territory and possession, keeping the ball amongst their forwards, with only some resolute defending allowing the Sarries to keep their line intact. However, the Sarries got back in to the game and started to string some excellent phases of play together and settled in to the Ilford half. Unfortunately, as the Sarries started a promising attack, a pass was intercepted which allowed Ilford’s Sri Lankan 7’s international to sprint ¾’s of the field to score under the posts. The extras were subsequently added

Stung by this set back the Sarries hit back with a try of their own. Some excellent work at the breakdowns saw them work half an overlap and as the ball was worked out to the evergreen Cwissy Parks he was able to round his man to score at the left hand corner. Despite an excellent strike Henners attempt at the conversion just sailed wide of the left hand upright.

From then on both sides introduced replacements at regular intervals, and this inevitably disputed the pattern of the match, with no further scores for either side

FINAL SCORE – CARDIFF SARACENS 5 ILFORD WANDERES 7

TRIES – Chris Parks

NEXT FIXTURE – WRU National Division 6 – Aberavon Naval (Away) – Saturday 5th September
