CARDIFF SARACENS v LLANRUMNEY – 12TH SEPTEMBER
After their first experience of life amongst the ‘big boys’ in the WRU National League set up, down the M4 in Aberavon last week, Saturday saw Cardiff Saracens first ever home game in a Division 6 Central match. However, their opponents were no strangers as Llanrumney had made the transition from Cardiff & District rugby to the National divisions a few seasons ago.
Ominously, the weather was more suited to running up a ‘cricket score’ in a Test match at the SWALEC stadium than a rugby match and so it turned out
From the kick-off the Sarries established themselves in the Llanrumney half, but a lack of precision stopped them from scoring. This was to prove costly, as once Llanrumney had settled they looked a well drilled and efficient side. Momentum had swung to the away team and at one stage during the first half they were scoring at the rate of over a point a minute. It was only the determination of a Sarries side, shorn of 12 first team players that stopped Llanrumney from running amok. A one stage the visitors were reduced to 13 men as they had 2 players sin binned. The first ‘yellow’ being correctly given for a ‘spear tackle’. However, the 2nd appear to be harsh as, although the tackle was slightly high there was no malicious intent. Despite this handicap, Llanrumney were in control to such an extent that the Sarries only threatened the line once, when an excellent driving maul from a lineout was held up just short of the line. All told, Llanrumney crossed for 5 tries during the first 40 minutes
HALF TIME – CARDIFF SARACENS 0 LLANRUMNEY 36
After the interval the Sarries appeared rejuvenated and for 15 minutes Llanrumney did not seriously threaten their line. However, this is a step up from the District leagues and the Sarries lost concentration for 5 minutes which allowed the visitors to cross for 2 tries. To their credit the Sarries never gave up and in fact enjoyed the better of the last 20 minutes as they went close to opening their account on several occasions. Nevertheless, it fell to Llanrumney to have the final say as they crossed in injury time
FINAL SCORE – CARDIFF SARACENS 0 LLANRUMNEY 57
